SPEAKER_05

So you want glitch complaining about wake stabilizers or um rapping the song about pizza that I wrote while you guys were actually working on things. Okay, I haven't I haven't done this out loud yet, so just to be fair, I'm literally sitting here just writing it. I've never actually rapped before, so this should be fun.

SPEAKER_00

Okay, speaking of music, hear the music. I'm Ian, your GM, and today we are joined by.

SPEAKER_01

Hi, I'm Audra. I play Tabitha, uh, the ship's quartermaster.

SPEAKER_09

Hi, I'm Garrett, and I play Tegan St. James, the ship's pilot.

SPEAKER_04

And I'm Bree, I play Glitch the Ship's mechanic.

SPEAKER_01

I'm sorry, I forgot the order. It's not that I forgot the order.

SPEAKER_04

I wasn't sure if I was just background noise. That was on me, sweetie by sorry. It's okay.

SPEAKER_00

In this special bonus episode, we find ourselves joining the crew of the Ryzen, having just landed on an unnamed worldlet in the mid-Empyrean. Standing on the bay door is one Tabitha and Tegan.

SPEAKER_09

Tegan lines up a shot. Him and uh Tabitha are playing Grav hole. Yeah, see, so Tabby, what you gotta do is you gotta compensate for the trajectory of the gravity line off of the minute fluctuations between your steps, and you can't normally tell, but the uh the balls can tell. I th I don't know, you throw it and you try to hit it in the hole and it goes squirrely, but uh I mean we got nothing else to do while glitch is fixing the ship.

SPEAKER_01

Okay, I got it. I think.

SPEAKER_00

Give me a finesse roll, Tabitha.

SPEAKER_01

Okay.

SPEAKER_09

Remember to account for the active perturbations of the you know, uh the ball.

SPEAKER_01

A roll to twelve with with fear.

SPEAKER_00

A twelve with fear, so I'm gonna get that fear, but twelve is enough. What does it look like when you throw the ball toward the grab hole?

SPEAKER_01

You know, like discus throwers, they do like a little spin and then they go to throw it. So I go to do that, but as soon as I let go of the ball, it starts to rotate in the opposite direction that I had been spinning in. Like seeming to have its own idea of uh how it should be uh thrown. And uh despite this weird anti-spin, it lands in the hole.

SPEAKER_00

Tegan, you've never seen a shot so uh absurd in all of your years of playing rapole. See, you're a natural.

SPEAKER_01

Thank you, thank you.

SPEAKER_00

So, right after you throw that, you hear a voice echoing out of the ducks in the ship.

SPEAKER_03

Oh god. Oh god, now it's whining. Good, good, that's a new phantom. I know how to fix whining. Now it's whining.

SPEAKER_02

Hey, hey guys, I don't know what you're doing, but uh you're gonna need to find some food because this is gonna take a while.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah, the wake stabilizers are not stabilizing, and everything here is being held together by corrosion and optimism and the will of the void.

SPEAKER_09

Alright, we're gonna get back to the Yeah, well that's a good idea, Tabby. Let's go hunting. I mean, I'm kinda tired of eating rations and it's gonna take as long as glitch is saying we we might have to. I think I saw some pangwangs earlier. They're tasty.

SPEAKER_01

Uh sure. Let's go.

SPEAKER_09

You ever had Pang Wang?

SPEAKER_01

What does it look like?

SPEAKER_09

Uh so they're kind of short and squat. Uh the the the little skittish, so you gotta sneak up on them. Uh normally don't let you get too close, so and he like pulls his carbine out. They kind of look like a mix between I don't know, a pang and a wang.

SPEAKER_01

That sounds vaguely familiar. I might have had that before.

SPEAKER_00

Uh that was magical. Um, since you just cornered uh Tegan and made him give an explanation, Tabitho, what is the environment that you're looking out at look like?

SPEAKER_01

So it's going to look a little swampy in some areas. A lot of like hanging vines and stuff like that. Many places where we'll probably have to like go through, like, you know, I guess depending on who you're looking at, ankle to knee deep water. Um stuff like that. But then like like semi-dry areas sprinkle throughout whenever the land gets a little bit higher. Uh, and you'll see like different trees are like the ones that grow more in the water area, and then like the drier land areas will be a different set of trees. So like the the landscape looks like it changes not super drastically, but like it's all like, oh, there's like dry land over there, like let's walk over there because there's like different types of trees there or something like that.

SPEAKER_00

What's the dominant colors of the landscape?

SPEAKER_01

It's gonna be like a blue-green, and especially like as the light filters through the leaves of the trees, because it'll be a very like broadleaf uh trees in the water and everything. Uh it's going to like change the hue of the light when you're standing underneath them a little bit to be more like um green.

SPEAKER_00

Okay, cool. All right, so you guys are walking uh into this area, I'm assuming.

SPEAKER_09

Yeah, so as we're you know, like we're walking, we're kind of stalking, we're talking low.

SPEAKER_00

Uh and when we You're walking and you're talking and you're stalking.

SPEAKER_09

Yeah. So when we hit particularly, like, you know, for it it's ankle, you know, deep water for Tabitha, but that's up almost to my like knees and up over my thighs. So when we get to, you know, really deep water, I'm just gonna climb on Tabitha's back. Like Tegan's got his gun out on Tabitha's back, and they're just walking, you know, as we're fjording these like little swamp areas.

SPEAKER_01

I I imagine you're like actually sitting on my shoulders with like your knees hooked around my arms and like tucked underneath my armpits. You know what I'm saying? And then you have your gun out like that, and I'm just like trudging through the water.

SPEAKER_09

Yes. We hit the thing, and I'm like, uh, Daddy, uh, I'm gonna eat puppies.

SPEAKER_01

I scoop you up, and I just want like that onto my onto my shoulders.

SPEAKER_00

Okay. While you guys are walking, Tegan, you think you maybe hear penguins in the distance. And you know that if you walk up to them too quickly, right, you'll uh spook them.

SPEAKER_09

Alright, well, uh, let's head around that little cop's trees there. Um you seem like you've done this before. Is this uh you ever been to a place like this?

SPEAKER_01

Uh not in this particular area or something, but I mean like I used to hunt a lot. Uh no, like that's how that's mainly how we get food where I'm from is hunting.

SPEAKER_09

Oh, I must uh yeah, well, I I grew up a farmer. Well, my parents had a homestead. It was farming's not easy where I come from. You gotta cut little ridges into the side of the cliffs and plant little long beds. And we weren't we couldn't hunt much. There wasn't a whole lot there other than than rubaroos, and they were all owned by the ranchers.

SPEAKER_01

Hmm. Interesting. Yeah, well, I I feel like I would go crazy if I just stayed in one spot and did that. Like I like I love roaming around. I love hunting.

SPEAKER_09

Yeah, we uh I mean we made the best of it. I mean, it was my my parents had moved out there and and settled the the homestead uh to get out from some debt and some other things. They didn't really go into it too hard when I was growing up. They had a life to left behind, but they uh bought tickets out to two dogs and uh they managed to sign on with one of the barons. That's the big Rubaroo ranch owners. They call themselves barons out there. And uh so they got a little plot of land to do some step farming and and paying tithes and whatnot. I gotta admit, it was boring as hell. Uh the Rubaros were uh they weren't ours. We didn't own we weren't we didn't have enough money to own any, but uh they're about the only damn thing you can do on two dogs as far as making money.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, that sounds rough. I'm sorry.

SPEAKER_09

It was yeah, it was boring. Uh probably why I ended up leaving. I was just I wasn't really built to be a a farmer.

SPEAKER_01

Uh that makes sense.

SPEAKER_09

Yeah, so uh when you left, uh you know, was it uh because you wanted to?

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, I mean, like it's pretty common with my people, like you know, if we like we so we have like my tight-knit like family groups and stuff, but like sometimes when we come across another like family group, you know, like it's like a change of pace or a sense of adventure, or maybe that like family group just like it's more your vibe kind of thing, you know, like we'll swap members and stuff like that so that you know we can like go on like more adventures uh away from our family and stuff. So like whenever I came across you guys, like I was like, you know, like I had the support of my family, they're like, Yeah, go and like adventure out uh like forth into the unknown and everything. And I thought that was like a really great opportunity. So here I am.

SPEAKER_09

Oh that's that's nice. So like one of these days, if you wanted to go back, you could go back.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, like they would they would welcome me back, they would love to hear all my stories, and I would love to hear what they've been up to while I've been gone.

SPEAKER_09

That's that sounds real nice. Uh yeah, when I left, my my daddy said never come back, and he said he didn't ever want to see me again.

SPEAKER_01

So well, you're always welcome in my clan.

SPEAKER_09

Thanks, Tabby.

SPEAKER_00

Uh and just then you see a few penguins come into view at what looks to be just about the range of your carbine. Carbine?

unknown

Oh alright, hold on.

SPEAKER_00

I'll line up a shot. May I get an attack roll?

SPEAKER_09

I can indeed. As soon as I change over to my carbine. That'd be a 15 with fear.

SPEAKER_00

Oh, that's the perfect roll. So, with that 15, you definitely hit it. I'm gonna go ahead and spin that fear. So you all feel and then hear a vibration that shakes the swamp. Uh you're aiming through these uh glass-leaf trees, and you shoot this penguin, and as soon as it drops, a creature, easily four or five times the size of Tabitha. Uh, dark fur with what looks like lighter stripes in it, or like a smoky undercoat, drops down, grabs this thing. You can't fully really make out what it is other than that it's enormous and it seems to have dropped out of nowhere. And then as quickly as it drops down on the penguin that you just shot, it leaps away. And you can see and hear the rustle of trees as it leaps out, and the force of it jumping is strong enough to shake the ground from where you are, but then gone. Even with as huge as it is. Damn it!

SPEAKER_09

It took a penguin!

SPEAKER_01

Let's go after it! That's exciting!

SPEAKER_09

Uh I I I I don't know, it's pretty big. I mean, what there's we can get we can get other penguins.

SPEAKER_01

I mean, that's what makes it exciting. Did you see it? And like I just I start running, and I'm like, oh like I'm holding Tegan's legs on my shoulders as I'm going so he doesn't slip off, and I just start like full tilt running towards this thing.

SPEAKER_09

But imagine like Tegan's face is getting slapped by branches and stuff as he's going.

SPEAKER_00

Alright, so Tabitha, may I get what kind of roll to track this thing? I'm guessing instinct?

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, probably.

SPEAKER_00

Okay. So normally I wouldn't make you roll except for this thing is uh whatever it was is incredibly stealthy. Also, Tegan, if you want to spend a hope to give her advantage, um, I will give you a temporary experience where because uh you're on her back, your body is actually breaking uh the branches in front of her so that she can like run more clearly.

SPEAKER_09

I'm being used like a s like a snowplow almost. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Uh absolutely, I will I'll spend that hope and uh uh help you by being a cowboy snowplow.

SPEAKER_01

Okay. I rolled an eight with hope.

SPEAKER_00

Uh can I get a d6 from you, T?

SPEAKER_01

A ten.

SPEAKER_00

Okay. Uh you run to where this thing was, and there is a scent, but it seems to be everywhere, and there's no physical trace, like no uh you can't see the body of this thing anywhere. And even though it was huge and you saw it shake the trees, there doesn't seem to be any like disturbance in the the trees. There like it doesn't seem like any branches were knocked down. This is crazy.

SPEAKER_09

Debbie, are you sure are you sure we want to do this? I mean we might fight enough a little more, we can chew here.

SPEAKER_01

No, we got this. Like, I used to have stuff like this with my mom and my like family all the time. Like, we we can do this.

SPEAKER_09

Uh okay. And Tegan like gets his rifle ready. He's really not comfortable with this. Okay.

SPEAKER_00

It's quiet. You have your rifle ready. Tap it you're sniffing the air. Do you guys do anything else?

SPEAKER_01

Uh can I try to, I don't know, some sort of like tracking thing to see which direction it might have gone in?

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, you've already done an instinct roll, so you have to try something else to track it. What do you want to do?

SPEAKER_01

What about knowledge analyzing my surroundings?

SPEAKER_00

Ooh, that's good. Go ahead and give me a roll.

SPEAKER_01

A 13 with fear.

SPEAKER_00

Oh, again, perfect, perfect roll. So you are looking down, and you can see that even though this thing didn't disturb the brush, that uh there's a like a layer of water on the ground, and you reach down and you're like reaching in, and you can feel that there are prints that are underneath the water, and they're very fuzzy, right? It it's uh in mud, but they're unmistakable. This is a creature that you have heard of in legend, and just when it comes into your mind what this creature is, I'm going to spend that fear, and right behind you all, a tree is going to rock violently as a dracoon lands in it. What? A dracoon for the listener is an elephant-sized raccoon with webbing from its front paws to its back paws so that it can collide. Now this dracoon looks like in its prime it was probably a very fearsome beast. But now looking at it, it's one of its eyes is clearly missing. Uh it has scars all over its body, including like one of its webs uh is torn. And it is missing, like visibly, about half of its teeth.

SPEAKER_01

So it's a little snaggle tooth.

SPEAKER_00

Snaggletooth dracoon. This elderly dracoon, and you know, you guys killing its dinner probably uh you know saved it, right? It looks like its best years are far behind it, but you all are in its territory, and uh Tabitha, you're currently crouched in the lunch position when the dracoon peels up. It still has penguin feathers on its lips from where it slurped down that penguin, uh, and it gives a roar, and you can smell the scratch breath. What do you all do in the face of this roaring dracoon?

SPEAKER_01

I'm gonna try to attack it.

SPEAKER_00

Okay. Give me that, give me that attack roll.

SPEAKER_01

26 with hope. Damn!

SPEAKER_00

Nice. Give me that damage and then tell me what it looks like.

SPEAKER_01

Okay. A four! I got two twos.

SPEAKER_00

Wow. Okay. So you've definitely hit, but it it's gonna it's gonna be a pretty a light graze. What's it look like?

SPEAKER_01

So I go to hit it, um, but like like mid-chop, it like blows a stank breath at me again. I'm like, look that. And so like my swing, like, while true, like didn't have the uh the umf behind it. And so like, you know, I I gave it a little cut, but like not the the blow that I was hoping for.

SPEAKER_00

Okay, so you you nick it on its cheek, right? And you cut one of its whiskers off, and one of its whiskers is easily thick enough to be used as a knife or a sword in its own, right? Uh, but yes, you can smell from its breath, and you've heard it legend, that its garbage breath is actually like weaponizable. It's caustic. But like the rest of him, his garbage breath just isn't what it used to be.

SPEAKER_01

I just try to feel bad for this thing. I'm not!

SPEAKER_00

Don't feel too bad.

SPEAKER_09

There's only two of us.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. Tegan, does a 17 hit your evasion? Uh yeah. Okay, cool. So, Tabitha, you've you pulled out your your sword, you charged this thing, you've nicked its face. It is going to screech at you, as you said, and then with its I was gonna say little toe beans, with its Volvo car size toe beans, it's going to grab Tegan and then screech again and leap into the air. It grabbed me? Like off her shoulders? It did indeed. Tegan, you are now mid flight over the classroom trees, and you can see Tabitha is shrinking rapidly. What are you doing?

SPEAKER_09

Okay. Man, I was really hoping that that roll with hope was gonna get me something to do before, but I know that it probably had- Oh!

SPEAKER_00

I spent a fear to interrupt the chain.

SPEAKER_09

Oh, okay, good. Okay, so I'm up in the air now with this thing. It's taking me, it's starting to try to fly away. I don't Oh, it's flying away. I I don't want to try to let it get too far because I'm afraid it's gonna take me to some sort of nest and feed me to babies or something. So what I'm gonna do something very stupid. Tegan's going to uh spend a stress, change his loadout from his carbine back over to Little Bub's lasso, and I'm gonna try to lasso the dracoon mid-air, uh, and which will make it restrained and vulnerable. Okay. Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Please roll that.

SPEAKER_09

Okay, um, so since um since I am technically flying right now.

SPEAKER_08

Yes! I was like, please!

SPEAKER_09

Could I spend a hope for my experience if it runs, rolls, or flies?

SPEAKER_00

I would be furious if you did not.

SPEAKER_09

Okay, um, we'll spend that.

SPEAKER_00

The number of things you have written in this campaign. It's so good.

SPEAKER_01

This thing runs and flies.

SPEAKER_00

And you're about to see it roll, depending on what he uh what he gets.

SPEAKER_09

Uh good news, bad news. Uh I got a 24, which I feel like is great, but I rolled it with fear, which I feel is not.

SPEAKER_00

Oh my god. So go ahead and describe the epic crash out of you whipping. out little bubs and lassoing this thing.

SPEAKER_09

Uh yeah, so Tegan is like, you know, beat he folds the carbine in one smooth motion, puts it back into its back holster, pulls out little bubs, and he looks at him, he's like, I I need you right now, buddy. Sorry about this. And he makes a wide loop as the wind's whipping by him, he whips it twice around, loops it up over the dracoon, uh, his head, and it's big enough that it goes around his shoulders. And then I pull its home and little bubs will like giggle. And as uh suddenly its arms are pinned to its side now and I'm like also crushed in this bear hug. Uh but it can't it can't fly anymore because it's restrained. And we can fall to the ground.

SPEAKER_00

Yes. And you are going to take quite a bit of damage from this. So will the dracoon. But yeah so this thing is going to go uh tits over tea kettles in the sky as you yank it down and you're you're adept enough at this sort of thing and especially like this is especially something actually I'm gonna have you what how does this relate to your experience of riding Rhubaros so uh so rubaroos look like a uh they look like a cross between a kangaroo um uh well more like a grasshopper and an antelope so they uh are famously hard to ride um like the you can't ride them like a horse or whatever but when Tegan was growing up uh sneaking away from the the farmstead trying to skirt his chores uh him and some of you know a couple of his delinquent friends uh would play this game where they would stand on one of the like steep hills and jump down onto the Rhubaros um and the the game was called Buckaroo so uh this is this is similar to that where like you have to kind of fly through the air grab onto something that does not want to be and when they throw you generally you fall way down the steep hill um so the goal is to try to hold on as much as you can and use the Rubaro if it bucks to try to like break your fall with their body. Okay. So um as you fall through the trees uh remembering your times playing buckaroo on two dogs and trying to like right this thing so that its body is underneath you when you hit the the trees you will slam through the canopy and I'm going to go ahead and give you or have you take rather 2d20 damage for falling damage. It's going to be direct so armor's not going to help and I rolled a 22 for damage. 22 so uh unsurprising probably to most listeners that's a severe damage uh that's that is past my severe damage threshold but I will say the whole way down I'm like Tabby Yes so uh cut to about 10-15 seconds earlier Tabitha you're sprinting through the the brush what do you do when you see this thing rip Tegan off your shoulders and leap into the air I mean I take off after it I saw him like staring up at the sky like running sword still out sloshing through the water trying to follow them as quickly as I can okay may I get an agility challenge roll from you you sure can a 20 with fear 20 with fear okay you are right underneath this thing when it lands so you're like running you you can see it like you know wobbling in the air and then it just starts to crash straight down so I'm going to uh spend that fear and can I get an agility reaction roll from you 22 with fear okay you will manage to jump out of the way just in time for this thing to smash on the ground and slide with Tegan on its belly like it's got him in that crush. Uh you can also hear Littlebub squeak in pain as it's raked hard against the ground.

SPEAKER_01

Okay.

SPEAKER_00

Tabitha what do you do?

SPEAKER_01

Okay so while they're disoriented from the landing I'm going to rush in and try to do another big chop on this thing's neck.

SPEAKER_09

Okay. It is still vulnerable and restrained.

SPEAKER_01

Ooh so you will get a D6 yep I rolled a 16 with fear.

SPEAKER_00

16 with fear alright give me that damage a six a six okay so this creature did not have a lot of health you know that a full prime dracoon would be a beast but this thing one it just took a lot of direct damage from crashing through the trees and then it was already in its last days right and so you like look at this thing and it's beady dracoon eyes and it opens its mouth to do the breath and you can tell that it's got that like terror in its eyes but also a knowing it's lived a long life it's had many many glorious battles it's sired many many offspring. At one point it was the king of this jungle and now it knows that its time is past and it gets to die in glorious combat. And so again it opens its mouth to do its breath but as it looks at you with like this knowing look it slowly closes its eyes to accept the blow uh and you in one swoop decapitate the elderly dracoon.

SPEAKER_09

Off to decide I'm actually really happy because uh that one thing took half my health so I was like I'm we I might die here to that end you almost just died.

SPEAKER_00

What's uh what's your reaction uh you're you're standing there that as soon as it gets decapitated its arms go slack and it's no longer gripping you I get up and uh really so Tegan's a little upset right now mostly because little bubs got hurt um so he gets up and he like ropes in little bubs and he checks them over and he's like damn it tabby I told you like the thing was too big we we we could have gotten killed I could have gotten killed little bubs could have gotten killed what what the hell I mean uh we didn't die though and now we have this like amazing story to tell of how we like you know gave this thing its its final last hurrah and like now we have food like tons of food I don't uh so Ian uh Tegan's a ranger does it look like we can eat this thing um I it looks like you could eat a little bit of it but you don't know you know you could bring back you know what meat you could carry in your arms uh but also you would need to cook it immediately right because there's no telling what sort of diseases uh this creature has and undoubtedly it's got a few and so the amount of its meat that you could safely eat is is yeah is pretty little and it would also just be what you could carry right you didn't bring a sled or anything to carry anything sizable back with. And Tabitha even as strong as she is cannot carry a full dracoon on her back.

SPEAKER_09

Okay.

SPEAKER_00

True but I got my my nomads pack you do not have a full dracoon meat sled No no I mean like I could I can carry some in that and then I can carry some in my arms you you could you could Tabitha could with with trouble carry one of this thing's haunches back probably but the you the meat's gonna spoil fast.

SPEAKER_09

So Tegan uh gives kind of a a deep sigh and he pulls out you know a a a skinny knife and he starts to like butcher some parts off of this and the whole time he's like it's just irresponsible. I mean we could have died I what I don't know what the hell she's thinking this could and he's like keeps glaring up at Tabitha and then Tegan suddenly has like a realization and he stops like dead in the middle of like deboning parts of this thing. Gods I sound like my father he just kind of stops and stares at you for a bit and he's like you know what I am glad you did that Tabby You're right it is gonna be a good story.

SPEAKER_01

I'm sorry that you got hurt. I just I don't know it's been a long time since I got to hunt something this big and I guess talking about my family I I didn't realize like how homesick I was becoming and uh I'm I'm sorry that it didn't have the best outcome You know what?

SPEAKER_09

I'll be fine.

SPEAKER_01

I've been hurt worse and we we did get some food so I get it let's uh let's head on back to the ship can I uh get a a like this thing's fang the dracus like a trophy yeah yeah the the snaggle tooth yeah it's a little snaggle tooth in it's in its crash out indeed there's only one tooth left in its head and uh yeah you you rip out the tooth alright I uh after I rip it out I like put my hand on its like forehead um while like rest well big guy and then like I just kind of like walk away with my my my tooth prize and put it my in my pack.

SPEAKER_00

Well do you do you help Tegan carry some of this meat back?

SPEAKER_01

Of course.

SPEAKER_00

Okay you just said I walk away so like I walk away from its I walk away from its face. Okay. Okay I gotcha.

SPEAKER_01

So like I start like loading a bunch of like meat and stuff into my pack. Um like uh can I use my Nomad pack thing to like pull out some rope sure uh to like tie uh some of this meat together so I can sling it over my back and then I like give a supporting arm to Tegan since he's injured.

SPEAKER_09

Yeah I'm I'm I'm limping a bit like as we're going back I mean uh Tabby I I mean I'm glad we got this much because I mean if we're gonna be here for a while but I can't imagine this is going to taste very good. It's gonna be stringy and I'm pretty sure it's full of worms.

SPEAKER_00

I mean there's lots of stuff that have worms yeah no no I want to eat little little Bob's coups at that put a band aid on him all right so you all make the trudge back to the ship uh and you're tired uh and sore and dirty and it's a quiet pensive trek back nearly silent except for the sloshing of your steps and the occasional penguin call in the distance and as you approach the ship in this quiet you hear something coming from the ship that grows as you get closer.

SPEAKER_01

Is that singing?

SPEAKER_07
